From House to techno.

Once again, we are honoured to bring ESP Institute back to you during this OffWeek ’23. As we told you last year, one of the most interesting labels on the other side of the ocean and after that party and with what they bring us this year, we reaffirm ourselves.
Along with Lovefingers and Heidi Lawden (who need no introduction and who rocked the dancefloor at La Terrrazza) this year we will have the great Palms Trax, called to be one of the renovators of the classic detroit sound and who have made us dance the most in recent times without making us think too much about whether it was House or Techno.

LINEUP

Palms Trax is a producer and Dj based in Berlin, Germany. His first record was released in October of 2013 on London-based imprint Lobster Theremin.
For aspiring DJs and producers, or indeed anyone who appreciates a good story, the genesis of Palms Trax couldn’t have read any dreamier. You know the one; curious yet naive son of the English Riviera lands a job at one of London’s leading record stores and discovers the masters of Chicago house and Detroit techno. Later, stumbling around Berlin, his primitive attempts to emulate the sound of his newfound heroes accidentally land him a bona fide dance floor hit. A gradual but steady stream of EPs courtesy of Dutch dance music powerhouse Dekmantel have allowed his productions to blossom in richer, smoother directions. On 2015’s ‘In Gold’ EP, and throughout the following year’s ‘High Point on Low Ground’, halcyon hallmarks of house – euphoric piano lines, bubbling acid and luminescent keys – are shot through with Donaldson’s tough, distinctive percussion.
It’s that same connection with Dekmantel that has encouraged Donaldson to quickly, impressively evolve as a DJ of some distinctive taste and talent. A memorable performance at Dekmantel’s flagship Amsterdam festival in 2015 captured open hearts, lost minds and aching feet. Since then, the sound of Palms Trax has been a fixture on their enormous main stage, drifting seamlessly between vintage house, esoteric disco and the various shades of a bubbling UK underground he has helped define. Occasional back-to-back performances with the likes of Hunee, Young Marco, Antal and Midland, all DJs regularly credited for their breadth of musical knowledge and sheer versatility, speak volumes for Donaldson’s DJing nous, which has lead him on an international trail; from South America to Australia, and from Panorama Bar to Concrete, Contact, De School, and Lux.
DJ, producer, promoter, label and A&R manager, Andrew “Lovefingers» Hogge has worn practically every hat there is to wear in the underground dance music industry over the past two decades.
Andrew brings the same deft curatorial hand to DJing as he does to his esteemed ESP Institute imprint, a global touchstone for genre-bending experimental dance fare. From day one, ESP Institute releases have found their way into the bags of dance-floor heavyhitters from Harvey to Weatherall and Moodymann to the legendary David Mancuso. While juggling all of the above and being an in-demand Creative Director, Lovefingers cherrypicks his sets at the worlds best club nights, warehouse parties, festivals and events, collaborates with his friends (notably with Lee Douglas as The Stallions, Eddie Ruscha as Secret Fingers, and partner inc crime Heidi Lawden), as well as make regular appearances on cult radio shows like Beats In Space and his own monthly show on Dublab.
If one thing has driven his myriad endeavors since the beginning, it’s the love of sharing music — pure and simple. An unwavering passion for crate digging and a penchant for the esoteric, have seen him emerge as a revered musical storyteller among discerning international listeners. He’s also a really good fucking time!
Heidi Lawden is a DJ, producer and occasional vocalist. She hosts a bi-weekly show Magic Roundabout on LA’s dublab.com and occasionally flees her LA base to DJ globally ‘The best parties, not ALL the parties’
Heidi Lawden was inspired by London’s club and rave scene as a teen and has worked in the world of dance music ever since. Now based in California, she DJs at the West-coast’s finest clubs, undergrounds and festivals, regularly tapped to share bills with heavy-hitters such as Andrew Weatherall, Bicep, Sherelle, Roman Flügel, Octave One, Honey Dijon, Folamour & Black Madonna. Fluidly combining House, Techno and synth-laden Disco oddities to create a world of her own, Heidi has gained the respect and admiration of her peers through her knowledge, style, and infectious excitement for the global dance music community.
Although having long since honed the subtle skill of the warm-up, Heidi excels with lengthy sets that truck through into the morning. A true crossover DJ traversing gay and straight parties, she invariably promotes fellow female and gender fluid artists through both her party bookings and radio show. Recent features include guest mixtapes for the likes of Honey Soundsystem, Pinchy & Friends, Test pressing, Love International, Desert Hearts & Feel My Bicep, the latter citing her mix among the site’s more popular.
Heidi collaborates with the ESP Institute and DJ Harvey by day, notoriously interview shy preferring to let her music, parties and mouthy tweets do the talking. Post pandemic will see her widening her schedule both in the US and EU including Panorama Bar, Kaiku, Horsemeat Disco, Coachella, Love International, Sunset Campout, Glastonbury, Kala festival, Daytrip Beat Hotel, Cocktail De Amore, Glitterbox, and Hï Ibiza.
